Sunday Snippets: Hello summer! And new rubber stamps

With temperatures here in Manila hitting 34-35 degrees Celsius, I can’t help but have summer on my mind. Last year, I missed out entirely on summer in the Philippines as I was away on a two-month trip elsewhere, but I’m home and languishing in the heat this year. It’s the kind of heat and humidity where you’re literally already sweating before you’ve even toweled off from taking a shower. No joke. Here are a few summery illustration snippets from recent/ongoing projects 🙂   * * * And of course, when it’s summer and you live in a tropical country with 7,107 islands, you hit the beach. Blog entry/article about the…

Sunday Snippets: on speaking English, how I draw sunblock, and the land of Oz

I don’t remember what I was thinking of that prompted this quick, warm-up drawing I made last week. But it’s a true story and during my last trip to the US almost a year ago, I got asked that question more times than I can count in a span of two months. One such incident was when I visited my cousin at her college dorm in Irvine and I was introduced to her American roommate. “Your English is so good!” the roommate exclaimed, after I answered the requisite questions on where I was from and how long I was staying in the States. She wanted to know how I…

    DIY Tattooed Banana (WHUT?!)

Here’s a fun and silly little DIY you can do this weekend with a banana, a needle or a pin, and a few precious minutes of your time which you will never get back!   Did you know that if you poke holes into a banana, the holes will turn brown almost immediately? “Saging lang ang may puso” is a line from a campy Tagalog movie that went viral a few years ago. Don’t ask. Let’s leave it at that.     Using a needle or a pin, poke tiny little holes into the banana skin.   The holes will turn brown and then black the longer you wait.…

    Christmas 2012

Non-committal, demographically-neutral holiday lettering, an excerpt from an ongoing project   How was everyone’s Christmas? 🙂 My December 25th is always spent with two sides of the family– lunch with relatives on my mom’s side, and dinner with relatives on my dad’s side. It has always been that way ever since I can remember. It’s set in stone. The days leading up to Christmas, though, is always a mish-mash of activities– Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, last-minute project-rushing… Three weeks before Christmas, I was working on a project (which I don’t want to talk about in detail just yet) and its deadline was several days before the 25th. I worked on…

Sushi and Tiger, and other cats in my life

Let’s get this out of the way: I am a crazy cat lady. Some of you might have noticed a brown tabby cat in my recent Wordless Wednesdays. That’s Tiger, just one of two cats I have. The Illustration Friday drawing prompt for last week was WHISKERS, and while I missed the deadline (hihi- didn’t have time to blog then), I thought it would be a good time to introduce you to my cats as they will be showing up a lot in my work (they already have, actually). This is SUSHI (7 months old). A few months ago, my family and I moved to a new house. Sushi lived…

    Instagram-ing!

I lost my phone just before the holidays. Let’s not get into how I lost it, but it involved stupidity. I wasn’t too bummed though. If anything, I was slightly relieved– I hated my old phone as it was hard to use and counter-intuitive. Losing my phone was an excuse to get a new one! :3 I went phone-less for a while because I couldn’t be bothered to get a new one in the middle of all the Christmas holidaze. So for two weeks I walked around, unwired from the world and without a care, as if I put everyone/everything else on the backburner. What a great feeling! I can’t…
