    Painting with gouache

I started painting with gouache recently. I’ve been thinking ahead (way ahead) and figured I can’t (and don’t want to) do digital art forever, especially in my old age (LOL). I’ve been an avid computer user since I was around 14, when I first started playing with Photoshop (starting with Photoshop version 4.5). I’m not at all ashamed to say I am quite the champion when it comes to staying in front of the computer for hours on end. It’s probably why my eyesight is so bad. Digital gets tiring though, and all those hours spent in front of the computer takes its toll on me. Sometimes I just want…

    Pusspins stickers on InstaSize

I was approached earlier this year by the guys at Munkee Apps to design a sticker pack for InstaSize, an app that lets you fit your photos on Instagram without cropping (among other things). I’ve never heard of InstaSize up until that point, but apparently it’s a very popular app across the iOS and Android platforms and I do notice my Instagram friends using it. InstaSize not only lets you fit photos; it can collage, add labels, filters, and backgrounds to your images as well. I was using 4 or 5 other apps to do these things prior to learning about InstaSize, so it was a relief to ditch the…

    It’s Caturday!

It’s Caturday! Whee!   Forgive the lack of posts– I’ve got lots of new work to show but no permission to share them yet 😛 This will have to do in the meantime! This is my shortest blog entry ever.

Subscribing to RSS feeds (mine, specifically)

Some of you might’ve noticed that going to my URL, Wedgienet.net, now brings you to my portfolio page instead of showing you my most recent blog posts, as was the case previously. Annoying? Very. I myself don’t like the extra step of clicking on the blog link in the menu bar above just to get to the recent entries. However, if I were to send my website link to an art director for her to check out my portfolio, my work is what I’d like to be seen first and foremost, not my blog. “So what about me, your average reader?” you complain. “Do I really have to make an…

    Play

I’ve been busy with several client projects, none of which I can show yet since they’re either under NDA or still in production, but I can show you some personal work 🙂 This started out as an entry to Lilla Rogers’ Global Talent Search contest where the winner gets two years of representation from Lilla Rogers Studio. I’m ineligible to enter as I already have agency representation but I liked the contest brief and thought I would work on it anyway, for fun and to possibly add to my portfolio. I’m not at liberty to share the exact details of the contest brief but I am allowed to say that…

Do more of what makes you happy: my first postcard mailer

After a few years of trying to get some illustration experience (having none after coming from a graphic design background), finding my style, figuring out which areas of illustration I want to specialize in, and building up my portfolio, I finally feel like I’m ready to take the next step: sending out a promo postcard mailer to potential clients (companies I want to work with). Before I even finished the illustration for what-would’ve-been-my-first-postcard-mailer, I already had a better idea. This is my quick and lazy concept sketch. I’m almost embarrassed to show you this. I drew this slumped over on a couch, and it shows 😛 My intent for this…

    Christmas, 11 months too early

I just recently finished some Christmas designs for my agent. When I say recently, I mean this month, January. Apparently, holiday designs are in demand all year round, with buyers in various stationery and art licensing shows looking for designs to license as early as January or February. Fortunately, the weather’s pretty cool and chilly here in Manila this time of year (it hit 18 C recently! Hello, climate change) so it’s not that ironic to be doing designs for December compared to, say, April or May, when the heat and humidity here is unforgiving.   And since I’m on a pattern kick lately, I made a seamless pattern from…

Sushi and Tiger, and other cats in my life

Let’s get this out of the way: I am a crazy cat lady. Some of you might have noticed a brown tabby cat in my recent Wordless Wednesdays. That’s Tiger, just one of two cats I have. The Illustration Friday drawing prompt for last week was WHISKERS, and while I missed the deadline (hihi- didn’t have time to blog then), I thought it would be a good time to introduce you to my cats as they will be showing up a lot in my work (they already have, actually). This is SUSHI (7 months old). A few months ago, my family and I moved to a new house. Sushi lived…

    My DIY chevron Chuck Taylors

What do you do with an old pair of white Converse Chuck Taylors? You decorate it with a black fabric marker, that’s what!     This certain style of Chucks has a reversible tongue — you can choose to wear it with the tongue underside displayed if you wish. I decorated the pink tongue with polka dots.     I drew a chevron template to use as a pattern for the shoe. Chevron patterns are very trendy right now, and while I’m usually not one to follow trends, this is one trend I like. Also, it’s easy to draw. LOL.   My cats seem to approve. Sushi   Tiger  …

    Illustration Friday: Lost

San Francisco, May 2012. It was my first time to really be alone while traveling. I was in San Francisco the month before, but only for a couple of days and with friends. Now I was back for some unfinished business and I didn’t bother contacting my friends in the city since it was a short and quick weekday visit. Sometimes I draw myself as a cat. Meow. Now I don’t mind traveling alone and in some ways, I prefer being alone so I can do anything I want without having to consider the other person’s needs/wants (ha, I’m selfish). Fun! What’s NOT fun, though, is getting lost alone. But…
