Here’s a peek at a little bit of what I do on weekends. For more than a month now, I’ve been deactivating my personal Facebook account on weekends to stay away from the news (which affects me as it makes me angry and my mood heavy), for my mental health and well-being, and to be more productive without the endless scroll of FB updates. I’ve slowly been working on this miniature DIY dollhouse kit instead while listening to online courses in the background (Pixar’s The Art of Storytelling free online course on Khan Academy and the Creative Christianity Summit from @cheerfullygiven) 🌱

I find that come Mondays, I tend to start the week better, clearer, and more lighter because of this weekend breather and mini-social media/news detox. I actually look forward to my Facebook-less and news-less weekends!
.
We can’t be too detached from what’s happening around us but we CAN disengage from time to time to take care of ourselves (and nothing wrong with that)... so eventually, we can take care of others. 🌱

Photo taken a week ago today; a last photo with my paintings together before I ship them out. OMG you guys. Last Monday my online shop went live at 9 AM and the first painting sold less than 30 minutes later. By the end of the day, I had sold 5. The next day I sold two more. 😱 I ended up selling all but one (the biggest/most expensive) of the first batch of 8 paintings that went up for sale 😱

Im still overwhelmed— can I tell you that around this time a year ago I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO WITH MY NON-EXISTENT ART CAREER AND MY LIFE? I felt lost and I would lie in bed for days— literally days— not doing anything (I’m belatedly realizing I was depressed and probably wasn’t aware of it LOL). The idea to paint Mama Mary just came to me in a dream months later and I started painting her in August 2019, in time for the first anniversary of my Marian self-consecration 🥺💖

Haven’t really processed things yet— my thoughts are all over the place and I will need to sit down to write out a proper blog entry of what God has done and is doing in my art— but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the support throughout the years, even when my art was at its lowest, when I was absent and inconsistent, when art wasn’t my focus and priority (because God is), and I was going through all these changes and ups and downs with my work (you’ve seen it all play out on Instagram). Now my art is shifting and evolving again but this time I’m liking where it’s going. It’s not all going to be religious art (I need my kitties and bears and other cute things!) but that’s definitely going to be a big part of my work moving forward 😍 And I’m so excited and looking forward to see how this all plays out 😱

Thank You, Lord. He has given me all these skills, talents, ideas, and new dreams and I just want to use it all for Him and his glory. ☝🏼🙏🏼🔥🥺

Taking photos of my paintings for my archive *should* I decide to make prints in the future. For now, just selling the originals to make room for more ☺️

An artist friend observed that some traditional Catholic imagery can be very morbid. I agree! Swords pierced through hearts, thorns dripping blood, pain and agony etched so clearly in the faces of statues and figures. While these images and emotions have their place in our faith and our life, it shouldn’t be so all the time! Remember— joy is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit (and one of my favorites!) and an essential in our Christian life.

I don’t know if I’ll ever come to depict the pain and agony in Catholic imagery in my cute, rotund, cheerful art style (that’ll make for an interesting challenge!) but while we’re not there yet (haha), I like to switch things up by painting less traditional depictions of Mama Mary such as this one. I call it Happy Mama Mary (an exceptionally cheerful one!) and it’s a 7.5 x 10 inch acrylic painting. This’ll look good framed under glass as it’s painted on canvas paper 🤗

I stopped painting during the quarantine for a variety of reasons— I was low on paint, my mood/productivity was affected by what was going on in the world, and since we don’t know until when this pandemic will last and its long-term effects on society and economy, I didn’t think anyone would be wanting to buy paintings at this time. But people were asking me when I was going to sell my work so I started painting again after I secured new tubes of paint and I adjusted to this new normal.

This Immaculate Heart of Mary wooden plate was painted during quarantine and is one of my favorites. The painted parts are varnished, giving it a sheen that stands out against the wood (Acacia) :) it measures 8 x 10 inches and comes with a metal stand. This is a 20 x 20 cm (7.8 x 7.8 in) acrylic painting on a deep edge canvas (also called a 3D canvas). I like these kinds of canvases because they’re nice enough to be dispayed on a wall even without a frame because of its wrap-around painted edges (swipe to see) 😍

“If Mary had known everything, would her merit be greater, or less?” 😱

This line struck me recently and made me pause as I was reading from my journal from 2017. It was a reflection point from a Prayer and Life Workshop session I was taking at that time. It made me think— Mary was a simple, young girl who had been given a hint ahead of time of God’s plans for her, including the painful parts (And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart. Luke 2:35). How great must her faith and trust in God had been to say yes— even to the less-than-ideal parts— without having all the details of what she was saying yes to 🥺

This was my very first Mama Mary acrylic painting on canvas— I started out small for practice. But I think it also captures the smallness (humility) and simplicity of the girl who would become mother to Jesus. 💖
